History

See how Highbanks Society has grown and where our roots began. With support from friends and family and later the community at large Bette Mitchell was ready, willing, and able. She took her motto and enthusiasm and made Highbanks the success it is today.

Highbanks' New Practicum Student

Hello all!

I am very pleased and humbled that Cecilia and Stephanie have accepted me on as Highbanks Society's newest practicum student. I am so excited to embark on this experience and learn a lot as I go. From May to August I will be working at Highbanks to complete 286 hours. I will be directly working with both Stephanie and Cecilia for the duration of my placement.

A little about myself, I am currently completing my fourth and final year at the University of Victoria; I will be graduating with a bachelors of Child and Youth Care. Born and raised here in Calgary I moved to Victoria, BC for schooling four years ago. I am now moving back to my lovely hometown permanently and am very excited about this change. I enjoy all kinds physical activity (especially the kind that involves outdoors), baking, reading and being creative (even though I’m no artist).

I am so excited to be here at Highbanks and cannot wait to immerse myself into this practicum!

Best Wishes,

Katie Sellers

Earth Day Celebrations

Happy Earth Day everyone!

The young moms at Highbanks have had their culinary skills put to the test with our monthly cooking program, and today we used those skills with a slightly different angle - cooking raw!  This evening we celebrated earth day by getting green with green smoothies complemented by raw brownies.  The snacks were nutritious (thanks, kale) and so delicious.  The best snacks are those you don’t have to feel guilty about!

Here’s to our health and the health of the earth!  Cheers.

Below, Jasie and Dylan make their own delicious green smoothie.

Happy 50th Anniversary!

Our dear friends and previous on-site guardians, Hattie and Joe Foote recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary! We were honoured to have the chance to swing by their new place to congratulate them on this amazing life achievement! Hattie and Joe are two of our most favourite people and they have been a shining example to our community of what a loving and respectful couple is. We could not be more proud and happy for them as they celebrate their golden anniversary!

Much love, Hattie & Joe, from your friends at Highbanks!

Self Esteem Does NOT Come in a Bottle!

Those words could not be any truer (and they happen to be the title of a great new book)! At last night's EWI Calgary General Meeting, we had the pleasure to listen to Kelly Falardeau as she told the story of her early childhood and her journey, as a burn survivor, from near death to success!

Once again, we are so pleased to be this year's EWI Calgary Charity of Choice and the recipients of the fundraising efforts by this dynamic group of women. In particular, we cannot thank Jacquie Stevens of Breakthrough Consulting enough for her continuous generosity to Highbanks. We now have both of Kelly's published books on the shelves of our resources library thanks to her!

Stay tuned as we update you on all the hard work going into the upcoming EWI Events - Hot Heels Spring Fashion Show on May 4th and the Charity Connect Classic on August 12th.
